The Municipal Utility obtains its water from 2 deep wells. A new well, identified as well #5 was put into operation in the fall of 1988. A new Electrodialysis Treatment Plant came into operation in 1995, replacing the old Reverse Osmosis Treatment Plant. The water leaving the new plant meets or exceeds all EPA and DNR requirements. The water is subject to routine testing to assure the highest quality. A well identified as Well # 3 was no longer available for service and was plugged in 2002.

The water distribution system continues to be upgraded. A fire hydrant replacement program was undertaken and the majority of fire hydrants have been replaced. Water main extensions have been installed to service new areas and to remove dead-ends by looping water mains together. The elimination of dead-ends has increased gallons per minute of water available from fire hydrants and increased the quality of water.

Alta Municipal Utilities is working on a wellhead protection program to aid in the prevention of contamination entering the wells. The utility is investigating the use of the telecommunication system to read water and electric meters. The utility is serving 845 customers with an average daily usage of 235,000 gallons. Upgrades to the distribution system continue so that Alta citizens will continue to receive high quality water.
